The sacred pool (Amrit Sarovar) was founded by Guru Ram Das Ji in 1577. The construction of the shrine was completed by Guru Arjan Dev Ji in 1604, who invited the revered Sufi saint Hazrat Mian Mir of Lahore to lay the foundation stone — a powerful historic testament to interfaith respect.
In 1604, Guru Arjan Dev Ji installed the holy Adi Granth inside the temple, appointing Baba Buddha Ji as the first high priest (Granthi). In the 1830s, Maharaja Ranjit Singh overlaid the upper sanctum with 400 kg of pure gold leaf, earning it the world-famous title “The Golden Temple”.

Unlike traditional temple architecture built on elevated plinths, the Golden Temple was deliberately built on a level lower than the surrounding ground, so that devotees must step down to enter, symbolizing humility.
